The museum was privately established in 1937 for the people of the United States of America by a joint resolution of the United States Congress.Andrew W. Mellon donated a substantial art collection and funds for construction many others have contributed since. The Gallery's collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western Art from the Middle Ages to the present, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas and the largest mobile ever created by Alexander Calder.

Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens, just 20 minutes from Alexandria, is the only national park established for the propagation of water plants. This site was established along the banks of the Anacostia in the early 1890’s and has literally blossomed into one the most beautiful places to see God’s handiwork. Join the DBC Seniors in viewing the thousands of pink Lotus blossoms and other water plants. Lunch at Mama’s Kitchen in Alexandria. Approx cost: Under $10.00.

Here is another beautiful DC location where we can appreciate God’s handiwork! Take a tram tour which highlights the 446 acres of the U.S. National Arboretum’s gardens, collections and natural areas. Walk through the lovely herb garden and Bonsai gardens. Return to Alexandria where we will have a delicious and entertaining Japanese meal at the Teppanyaki table and watch your food being prepared.

Long a favorite of DBC Seniors, Mrs. K’s Toll House Restaurant is situated in what was the last operating tollhouse in Montgomery County. Just like modern day tollgates, travelers would stop and pay a toll before using the privately owned road. The Washington-Colesville-Ashton Turnpike ran from Silver Spring to Ashton along what is now Route 29. The resident farmer, Mr. Allen, accepted the tolls of about 4 cents a horse. See their fine antiques display and beautiful gardens.
