Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)
The Missions Ministry at DBC takes this commandment from Jesus as our mission statement. We use it representatively; a constant reminder that we are called to share the Good News of Jesus Christ
in Alexandria, but in all Virginia, the United States and around the world!
The Missions Ministry is a dynamic, God-led program. The Bible is filled with examples of God using ordinary people who have a bundle of flaws and imperfections to do extraordinary things--We recognize that the real power comes from God and not from us. Our fervent prayer is that through opportunities and inspiration offered by missions projects, members and visitors to our church develop a true "Heart for the Nations" and a desire to learn to serve God by serving others.

In Alexandria and Virginia
Right here in our own community, DBC works hard to be Jesus hands and feet in our community. We participate in monthly ministry at The Carpenters Shelter right here in Old Town, where we prepare and serve dinner for the residents of this homeless shelter. We fund a missionary who works teaching English to the Muslim community in northern Virginia. We actively participate in the Good News Prison Ministry with our financial support and grading papers for a Bible study to local inmates. New opportunities are always arising as we seek to live out God's calling for us to be His hands and feet.
To help our outreach in Virginia and Alexandria, DBC is a member of the Baptist General Association of Virginia and the NorthStar Church Network. The financial support we provide these groups helps to fund their various ministries.
In the United States
We support New Dawn, a Christian camp in Georgia that reaches at-risk children through soccer and puppet camps as well as other types of outreach. Our desire is to foster a love for missions by offering the opportunity for our members to experience serving others first hand. To help further reach those without Christ here in the U.S., we support the Southern Baptist North American Mission Board, which also reaches people in Canada and Mexico.
To The Nations
This part of the commandment seems like a tall order for the moderate-sized Downtown Family at 212 South Washington. However, one of the wonderful things about our being a Southern Baptist church is that we are part of an organization that literally reaches all nations through the Southern Baptist International Mission Board (IMB). The IMB seeks to send missionaries into every part our world, illuminating each dark corner with the light of Christ. DBC supports the IMB efforts through prayer as well as funding.
We are also blessed to partner with a seminary in Moscow, Russia. We actively support the Moscow Theological Seminary with prayer and finances. We helped pay for a missionary to finish seminary which will allow her to become a career missionary. Some members volunteer for short-term mission project overseas, like distributing Bibles in Turkey and assisting with children's ministries in Australia. We also have a new partnership with a church in Chupadero, Mexico. As God reveals to us new places and ways we can minister to the world, we actively pursue them.
